DREAMS OF THE BLIND will present the multimedia compositions of two composers, Yannis Kyriakides and Raphaël Cendo as well as an acoustic work by Francesco Filidei – studies of musical sensation that conceptually pull the listener into the artistic narrative. Composers explore the possibilities of musical communication, investigating the relationship between perceived sound, emotion and language as well as how all of these elements define the sensation of sound.
DREAMS: Through the medium of text, composer and sound artist Yannis Kyriakides juxtaposes the ambiguous language and emotional content of a dream with the equally ambiguous and emotionally evocative language of music. As they read the account of the dream and listen to the accompanying music, members of the audience begin to conjure up images in their own minds and thus create alternate dream versions. In addition to this, by hearing their own inner voice reading the dream text, listeners become central performers in the composition without even being on stage.
WRECKAGE: Raphaël Cendo’s main creative principle is to step over boundaries by using a surplus of energy. This piece for contrabass clarinet requires more than ordinary technical ability and pulls the performer’s body into the field of the composition in order to represent the primal ritual of sound. The accompanying electronic music closely imitates the instrument’s timbral clusters, leading different sources of sound with extreme energy towards destruction and frenzy.
